Carence Korzelius is a fine art photographer based in Haarlem (Netherlands).
After deciding to end her career working in the family business in Amsterdam, she decided to follow her heart. In 2018 she stated with the base course at the Fotoacademie. which was the first step in photography. After a short periode of coaching at Studio307 by Milan Gies she decided to start the 'Conceptueel Beeld' course in 2022 at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam and graduated in 2024.
For my recent photographic works, I have taken the Japanese philosophy of Chōwa as my starting point. Chōwa means 'the pursuit of a life in balance'.
A life in balance is one where all aspects are in harmony. For me, the focus lies particularly on physical and mental well-being. Partly due to my Tinnitus, which is a sound that may or may not be imaginary but is always present in my head, I have delved deeper into what the Chōwa philosophy entails. It thus forms a basis for my attitude and mindset.
Through my images, I aim to poetically translate my quest for silence, balance, and tranquility (which I cannot always find). Stillness, aesthetics, color, and form are elements in my visual language. My work is intuitive and originates from emotions and experiences. It can be seen in a broader sense as self-portraits that tap into deeper layers and feelings connected to specific moments and places. It all revolves around the balance between structure and freedom, rhythm and routine, and the choice between staying somewhere or following your own path.
